Raphael Lemkin: the loneliness of a person fighting for justice

INDEX: Institute for Documentation and Exchange has published a new article, “Raphael Lemkin: The Loneliness of a Person Fighting for Justice,” by Svitlana Myronchuk, Communications Manager of the Raphael Lemkin Society.

The text explores the life and legacy of Raphael Lemkin, the lawyer who coined the term “genocide” and devoted his life to securing its recognition in international law. The article also reflects on the limits of the 1948 Genocide Convention, the importance of Lemkin’s views on the Holodomor as genocide, and the continued relevance of his ideas in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The article also highlights the work of the Raphael Lemkin Society in Ukraine, which brings together lawyers, researchers, cultural figures, and human rights defenders to seek accountability for Russia’s genocidal practices and crimes against Ukrainian culture.
